Complex floral behavior of an angiosperm family

چکیده

Segundo-Ortin & Calvo provide a comprehensive overview of the many aspects plant behavior examined to date. In our view, multiple lines evidence make it difficult deny sentience. We add further support conclusion that plants are sentient organisms. As in animals, can be seen and studied as an evolutionary trait, subject consequence increasing complexity interactions with their environment. Our example is evolution floral Loasaceae, where complex patterns stamen movement have co-evolved interaction specialized pollinators.

Archaefructaceae, a new basal angiosperm family.

Archaefructaceae is proposed as a new basal angiosperm family of herbaceous aquatic plants. This family consists of the fossils Archaefructus liaoningensis and A. sinensis sp. nov. Complete plants from roots to fertile shoots are known. Their age is a minimum of 124.6 million years from the Yixian Formation, Liaoning, China. They are a sister clade to all angiosperms when their characters are i...

Montsechia, an ancient aquatic angiosperm.

The early diversification of angiosperms in diverse ecological niches is poorly understood. Some have proposed an origin in a darkened forest habitat and others an open aquatic or near aquatic habitat. The research presented here centers on Montsechia vidalii, first recovered from lithographic limestone deposits in the Pyrenees of Spain more than 100 y ago. This fossil material has been poorly ...

Non-equilibrium dynamics and floral trait interactions shape extant angiosperm diversity.

Why are some traits and trait combinations exceptionally common across the tree of life, whereas others are vanishingly rare? The distribution of trait diversity across a clade at any time depends on the ancestral state of the clade, the rate at which new phenotypes evolve, the differences in speciation and extinction rates across lineages, and whether an equilibrium has been reached. Here we e...

Floral specialization and angiosperm diversity: phenotypic divergence, fitness trade-offs and realized pollination accuracy

Plant reproduction by means of flowers has long been thought to promote the success and diversification of angiosperms. It remains unclear, however, how this success has come about. Do flowers, and their capacity to have specialized functions, increase speciation rates or decrease extinction rates? Is floral specialization fundamental or incidental to the diversification? Some studies suggest t...
